The title of this post is of course a joke, but the spread of the ash plume from Iceland (here in a simulation from the European space agency) is surprising. Rejkjavik of course has no control nor responsability for this natural event but I can't help noticing that all the ash goes South, East and then West into the Atlantic (right on those polar airline routes...) while none of it spreads North into the island itself.

I'm just growing a bit concerned (girlfriend says it's geological paranoia...) as i a few days speakers should start flying into Perugia for the <a href="http://www.ijf10.org">Journalism Festival</a>, and transatlantic flights really seem to have some issues now.

Anyway, the eruption is impressive and I wish I could go see it for myself. Here a great sequence from Boston Globe's Big Picture.

Per un'etica aumentata

La Stampa riprende con un ampio pezzo il l'incontro Ecsel di giovedì scorso a Roma moderato da Sylvie Coyaud e da me sula biologia sintetica e le nuove sfide della bioeconomia a cui dovremmo (soprattutto in Italia) far fronte con una biotica più pragmatica e meno accademica.

L'appuntamento è stata anche l'occasione per inoltrare formalmente ai Ministri Fazio, Gelmini e Prestigiacomo, oltre che al Comitato Nazionale per la Bioetica, un Scarica Testo mozione per un dibattito civile sulle tecnologie che stanno già plasmando il nostro corpo, la nostra società e la nostra mente.

Pulitzer al giornalismo investigativo di Propublica

L'inchiesta di Sheri Fink sulle eutanasie praticate quattro anni fa nel Memorial Medical Center di New Orleans durante l'uragano Katrina pubblicata sul New York Times magazine lo scorso agosto e di cui avevo già parlato qui ha vinto il premio Pulitzer per il giornalisimo investigativo.

Congratulazioni a Fink, la cui inchiesta è una vera doccia fredda, ma anche a Propublica e alla Kaiser familiy foundation che hanno sostenuto il suo lavoro costato almeno 400mila dollari (sic!).

E, last but not least, congratulazioni a Paul Steiger, direttore di Propublica, che la settimana prossima sarà al Festival di giornalismo di Perugia per un keynote e per un panel proprio sui modelli di business del giornalismo investigativo (confesso la piccola autopromozione, ma credo che l'appuntamento lo meriti).

TH!NK3, a blog competition for sustainable development

A few more hours and TH!NK3, the third edition of the popular European blogging competition set up by the European Journalism Centre will kick off here in Brussels at the Vaudeville Café and then tomorrow in the Grande Place.

Previous editions have covered EU elections and Climate Change. This time it'll be sustainable development and global cooperation as we approach the UN meeting on the Millenium development goals staged in September.

This is my first time as a TH!NKer but Ireckon it'll be fun. The theme partially overlaps the what I usually cover as a reporter and I hope it'll actually push me to write more even for commercial outlets.

It'll also be a great chance for networking. Participating in the competition are many fellow journalists, journalism students, academics and experts from 27 EU Member States, neighbourhood countries and beyond.

We'll start posting on March 24, 2010 and on until 31 August, 2010.

And did I mention there will be prizes?!

Top bloggers will get the chance to travel around the world and cover the issues from the field via reporting expeditions to Asia, Africa and New York City!

Ogm, salviamo Carlo Petrini dalle sue patate

"Carlin" Petrini, fondatore del movimento Slow Food è bravissimo a coinvolgere i non addetti ai lavoro sui temi più tecnici dell'agricoltura e dell'ambiente, ma c'è da essere preoccupati per la sua salute...

Poco fa, discutendo con un ricercatore che di biotecnologie agricole si occupa per mestiere siamo finiti a parlare dell'ultimo intervento di "Carlin" sulla prima pagina di Repubblica: SE L' UOMO SI FA DEL MALE.

Carlin la tira per i capelli (e c'infila anche qualche inesattezza fattuale: la famigerata patata "Amflora" autorizzata per gli usi industriali dopo 14 anni di esami da Bruxelles non serve a produrre cellulosa, ma amido), ma soprattutto ci regala una pericolosa castroneria!
Questa volta non di chimica, ma proprio della più tradizionale agronomia... della quale dovrebbe essere il paladino.

Ma ecco il passaggio "incriminato":

"Una patata la cui pianta però ha delle foglie, oltre gli scarti di lavorazione, le quali resterebbero inutilizzate senza l' autorizzazione per l' alimentazione animale arrivata ieri. Gli animali poi li mangiano gli uomini e quindi, indirettamente, mangeremo le foglie di una patata modificata con un gene resistente agli antibiotici, cosa espressamente vietata dal 2001".

Ora, qui sembra di capire che per Petrini sia normale dare da mangiare le foglie di patate non Ogm ai suoi animali...

La cosa è bizzarra per due ragioni.

1) una volta raccolti i tuberi non hanno praticamente più foglie e quelle che rimangono sono ormai secche (come nella foto) e senza valore nutritivo (strapparle prima infatti significherebbe sottrarre energia al tubero e quindi ottenere meno prodotto). Quindi cosa mangiano gli animali di Petrini?

2) se "Carlin" sacrifica l'accrescimento dei suoi tuberi per metterne le foglie verdi nella mangiatoia dei suoi animali c'è veramente da preoccuparsi per loro (e da denunciarlo per maltrattamento...) e per lui. Le foglie fresche delle patate, come quelle di molte solanacee contengono glicoalcaloidi fortemente tossici per l'uomo e per gli animali che possono provocare la morte.

C'è veramente da sperare che il fondatore di Slow Food sia scivolato su una buccia (di patata?) e non sottoponga i suoi animali a simili trattamenti, perché altrimenti ci sarebbe da dubitare sulla sua competenza in materia agronomica e zootecnica...

PS: nel pezzo ci sopno comunque altri punti che vale la pena approfondire. Ad esempio quando Petrini osserva che "la superficie coltivata a OGM nel continente (Ndr: Europa) si è ridotta del 12% (secondo il rapporto 2009 dell' Isaaa, International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications)".

Come poteva essere altrimenti vista le legislazioni nazionali e regionali come quella italiana che impediscono semine Ogm? Petrini non è giornalista e quindi legittimamente porta acqua al suo mulino, ma per completezza d'informazione va detto che, proprio secondo il rapporto Isaaa citato la superficie seminata con sementi Ogm è aumentata del 13% nel 2009 nei Paesi in via di sviluppo rispetto all'appena +3% (2milioni di ettari) nei Paesi industrializzati. Il che vuol dire che il 46% della superficie mondiale seminata a Ogm è nei Pvs.

100.000 Italian petitioners (+100% in 24h) accuse TG1 of FRAUD

In Italy, where Google executives are sentenced to 6 months in jail and the web is frowned upon bipartisanly from all political sides, more than 100.000 citizens have signed an open letter accusing of fraud the editor in chief of TG1, Augusto Minzolini, for airing false news of aquittal of Berlusconi's lawyer, David Mills.

In fact, charges against the british lawyer ceased to be valid as a result of the statute of limitations.

Such a blunder would have earned the boot to any journalism student... Instead, TG1 aired it internationally.

The letter posted on Facebook last Sunday (below is the English text), was addressed to the President of the Italian National Journalists Association, Lorenzo Del Boca, by Arianna Ciccone, and has gathered more than 100.000 subscribers in less than three days. To sign, people simply needed to join the associated Facebook group which sports a figure of the late Enzo Biagi, one of the most popular Italian journalists who was evicted from Rai during Berlusconi's previous mandate.

Ciccone, who defines herself not as a media activist, but a sincerely passionate media consumer and has launched the International journalism festival in Perugia, is elated.

In little more than 48 hours her initiative has gathered more than 100.000 subscribers (+110% in the last 24h). This is a quite overwhelming support as it contradicts the common assumption (expecially in Italy) that the web is an obscure space where users enjoy anonimity and cultivate indifference.

In fact, this last event rather underscores how lively and strong the demand for balanced information is in the country and how many citizens are turning to the web for making themselves heard. Putting out their face and name to defend it (literally... it's Facebook).

So here's the English text of Ciccone's letter which has been mailed to President Del Boca earlier today.

Del Boca is also one of the guest speakers to the International Journalism Festival, where he will surely have lots of questions from the public.

subject: report of severe violation of the professional code of conduct

Dear Mr. President,

I’m writing to you on behalf of myself and I believe of all the citizens that have truth and the dignity of the journalistic profession in this country at heart. Let me begin by stating that this is not about left or right, or whether it’s legitimate for the director of RAI 1 News to express his views (personally I believe that a news director has a right to express his thoughts and his opinions). This is about the professional code of conduct and the fundamental role of journalism. Yesterday at 13.30, as you know, RAI 1 News gave a false report. Now, I believe that none of us should accept this. Therefore I expect an exemplary reaction from the Association to an episode that humiliates the journalistic profession and the citizens of this country.

As the commentator Michele Serra, rightly observes: "To be able to say on the TV news, or write in a newspaper, that ‘Mills has been acquitted’, thus trying to pass off as an acquittal what in reality is a guilty verdict rendered invalid as a result of the statute of limitations, you’re got to be a real scoundrel. I’m not saying biased, or manipulative, or a bootlicker, I’m saying scoundrel because altering the truth is a crime for a journalist, just as it is for a baker to spit in the bread he makes. This is not about opinions, interpretations or political passions. This is actual fraud, filthy fraud that highlights not a nation split in two but something far worse: full-blown impunity to those who lie with malice, method, intention, certain of not having to answer to anyone (and a reaction from the Italian National Journalist Association? It would be more realistic to hope for an intervention of Batman).
Then again, why should journalists in this country of impunity be exempt from the privilege of spreading lies and cheating public opinion without consequences? Many of their masters and political representatives in the last twenty years have pursued and amply experimented in every way the pleasure of impunity. May their employees also share in this pleasure".

Do these thoughts hurt you as much as they hurt me? Now, dear President Del Boca, I as an Italian citizen expect from the Association that disciplinary measures be taken against the journalist who has so blatantly violated the fundamental principle of the code of conduct: to tell the truth. I expect, dear President Garimberti and dear Director Minzolini, the apologies of RAI 1 News and a correction of the false report.

I terremoti dei prossimi 40 anni

Dopo il sisma che ha devastato il Cile i sismologi ricordano (anocra una volta) che prevedere i terremoti dove e quando colpirà con certezza un terremoto è impossibile.

Le analisi della Koeri-Bogazici University, in Turchia, hanno permesso al NYTimes di elaborare una bella cartina che mostra dove l'impatto di una scossa, anche non fortissam potrebbe fare i maggiori danni nei prossimi 40 anni. Un'analisi che prende in considerazione non solo il rischio sismico, ma soprattutto come sono costruite città e case.

PechaKuchaNight, a Helsinki la terza cultura si tocca con mano

PechaKucha in giapponese è come dire bla-bla, ma da Tokio a Helsinki è ormai il sinonimo di presentazione creativa. E' cominciata con i designer ai quali si chiedeva di presentare al pubblico 20 immagini esposte per 20 secondi l'una. Un tempo sufficiente per dire delle cose, ma possibilmente non abbastanza per annoiare. All'ultimo Designweek di Helsinki, capitale del Design 2012, hanno cominciato a farlo anche gli scienziati.

Il formato è veramente divertente e molto agile. Ma soprattutto si adatta bene allo spirito di Helsinki, una vera città illuminata, che ha apertamente dichiarato di voler ridisegnare se stessa e farlo in maniera partecipata, sostenibile e mettendo a sistema tecnologie e talenti.

Un pezzo importante è Kaapeli, la famosa cable factory portata in palmo di mano da chiunque voglia ragionare di industrie creative come il network Europe Trans Halles.

La Cable è un posto speciale. 53mila mq di un'ex-fabbrica Nokia convertita a centro culturale nel 1992 dove pui incrociare giovani rocker professionisti che incidono demo e cd (ma c'è anche una macchina per i vinili!), ma anche giovani gamers, ballerini, maestri di arti marziali, architetti e fotografi. Il direttore non a caso è un matematico divenuto promoter di uno degli eventi heavy metal più famosi del Paese.

Un percorso strano? Forse non tanto, in sala pesi spicca il ritratto del primo direttore di Kaapeli, Verner Weckman, ingegnere e pesidente di Nokia, ma anche primo oro olimpico Finlandese. La terza cultura che fonde tecnologia, cultura e società qui non è un'invenzione, ma una tradizione.

Europei pazzi per il cinema - verso 1 miliardo di bliglietti

Adesso daranno di nuovo colpa alla televisione.. ma alla fine è una bella notizia. Nel 2009 in Europa si sono staccati quasi un miliardo di bilglietti per i cinema racconta l'Osservatorio europeo. Non è ancora la quota record del 2004 (1,013 miliardi) ma sono sempre 100 milioni di biglietti del 2005. Alla faccia del cambiamento dei consumi e del devastante impatto di internet, il film visto nelle sale continua ad avere il suo perché.

Un po' come la musica. L'mp3 e la rete hanno tutt'altro che svuotato i concerti.

500 anni di tecnofobie

Il terrore di un overload di informazioni in grado di sopraffarci definitivamente non è storia recente. Anzi, ci accompagna da almeno 500 anni. Tra i primi a paventare i pericoli delle tecnologie dell'informazione (erano in tempi di Gutenberg) fu il medico svizzero Conrad Gessner.
